Slag Grinding Plant Project – Russia (300 t/h)
300 t/h GGBS slag vertical roller mill plant delivered in Russia. Blaine 4,800 cm²/g, 38 kWh/t. EPC slag grinding solution by Zhengzhou Sinoma.
Project Details
Project Overview
This 300 t/h ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) grinding plant was delivered to a major cement and construction materials group in Russia. The customer wanted to replace part of Portland cement in concrete with high-activity slag micro-powder — both to cut cement clinker consumption and to meet Russia's growing demand for sustainable, lower-CO₂ concrete.
Zhengzhou Sinoma Engineering Technology was awarded the EPC contract after the customer benchmarked our slag vertical mill reference plants in Central Asia. The scope covered process design, equipment supply, sea and rail logistics, on-site installation supervision, commissioning, and operator training.
Customer Background & Goals
The customer operates an integrated cement plant in central Russia and had access to low-cost blast-furnace slag from a nearby steel mill. Their goals were clear:
Produce GGBS powder at 300 t/h, fineness 4,500–5,000 cm²/g (Blaine)
Use the slag powder as cement replacement and as a standalone concrete additive
Cut specific power consumption versus a traditional ball mill circuit
Meet strict European-style dust emission limits (< 10 mg/Nm³)
Technical Solution
The line is a modern slag vertical roller mill (VRM) circuit, integrating grinding, drying, and classification in one machine. Hot gas for drying comes from a waste-gas source connected to the adjacent cement kiln, recovering otherwise wasted heat.
| Section | Equipment |
|---|---|
| Feed & storage | Jaw crusher, bucket elevator, 5,000 t slag silo, vibrating feeder |
| Core mill | Vertical slag mill (VRM), 3,000 kW main drive |
| Classification | Dynamic high-efficiency separator, adjustable Blaine 4,000–5,500 cm²/g |
| Dust collection | Pulse bag filter, outlet < 10 mg/Nm³ |
| Conveying & dispatch | Air-lift pump, screw conveyor, 2 × 2,000 t GGBS silos with packing dispatch |
| Control | PLC + touchscreen HMI, remote access enabled |
Key design features:
High automation — PLC-based control with remote operation, automatic gap adjustment between rollers and table
Stable throughput — Optimized roller and table profile holds 300 t/h even at varying slag moisture (8–12%)
Long wear life — Ni-hard/chrome-iron rollers and table liners extend service interval to > 8,000 hours
Product quality — Stable Blaine activity index > 95%, suitable for CEM II/A-S and CEM III cement
Project Timeline
| Phase | Timeline | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| EPC contract signed | Mid-2022 | Process design, foundation drawings, long-lead equipment order |
| Manufacturing | Late 2022 | Mill housing, grinding table, rollers, separator fabricated in-house |
| Shipping | Nov 2022 | Breakbulk from Chinese port to St. Petersburg, then rail to site |
| Installation & commissioning | Dec 16, 2022 | Mechanical erection, electrical, DCS integration, trial run completed |
| Performance test | Q1 2023 | Guarantee test passed at 300 t/h, Blaine 4,800 cm²/g |
Results After One Year
Capacity: Sustained 300 t/h at design fineness, occasionally reaching 320 t/h
Specific power: Whole line holds ~38 kWh/t at 4,800 cm²/g — roughly 25% below a comparable ball mill circuit
Product quality: 28-day activity index > 95%, accepted by local ready-mix and precast customers
Dust emissions: Bag filter outlet consistently below 8 mg/Nm³
Uptime: Over 9,000 running hours, first roller re-surfacing scheduled after 12,000 hours
CO₂ benefit: Each tonne of GGBS replaces ~0.8 t of Portland cement clinker, helping the customer meet Russian decarbonization targets
Customer Feedback
"Zhengzhou Sinoma delivered a robust slag vertical mill that runs exactly as promised. Installation was smooth, and their engineer stayed until our operators could tune Blaine on their own. The power savings alone paid back a meaningful share of the investment within the first year. We are already planning a second line."
